The grandkids are heading to Phoenix, and they’ll show up with the energy of a V6 engine. Instead of staying at home where they may end up running circles around you, fill your itinerary with fun activities. Some of the best things to do in Phoenix with kids are also fun for adults. Here are six places to take your grandkids that you can also enjoy.
You’re never too old to become giddy at the sight of exotic animals, and young kids become wide-eyed at the chance to see Chilean flamingos and mountain lions in person. The Phoenix Zoo has dozens of different species, and it also host daily interactive activities and shows. See a film in the 4-D movie theater, hop a ride on the eco-shuttle around the park, and take advantage of family programs like the “Lunch with a Keeper” experience.
Children’s Museum of Phoenix
The Children’s Museum has created a space where kids can learn and explore, and adults will remember how to play. Your grandkids get to participate in a variety of art and movement programs that change monthly. Typical activities include Brain Time with sensory play for toddlers and Kid Art Candles for Grandparents, where your grandkids’ artwork will be added to a candle keepsake. Permanent exhibits include the book loft and block-building area.
SEA LIFE Arizona
This space is more than your average aquarium. SEA LIFE covers 26,000 square feet and holds thousands of creatures. You and your grandkids can see seahorses, clownfish, turtles, sharks, and more during your day between the aquarium’s massive tanks. Treat the kids to a behind-the-scenes tour and make a stop at the interactive tide pool, where starfish and other creatures await. The experience is incredible for kids who have never lived near the coast, or teens who show an interest in oceanography.
Goldfield Ghost Town
At the gateway to the Superstition Mountains, this charming Old West town is a fun place to spend a few hours with the family. As you walk down Main Street, you’ll pass historic buildings and can pick up mementos at the general store. The kids will also love panning for gold and witnessing a reenactment of an Old West showdown between two gunslingers. Goldfield Ghost Town’s railway is a great way to relax while still touring the area.
You can introduce your grandkids to the rainforest right in the middle of the desert when you visit the magical Butterfly Wonderland. There are about 3,000 butterflies at the indoor venue, but they aren’t the only creatures here. After learning about the entire lifespan of a butterfly from caterpillar to taking flight, visit the rainforest reptile exhibit and watch honey bees make honey. At the 3-D theater, you’ll get to experience butterflies that appear to be jumping out the screen.
Arizona Capitol Museum
Kids who are curious about history and culture will enjoy a tour of the Arizona Capitol Museum. Not only is this building where the wheels of government turn, but it’s the site where much history of the state has unfolded. The space includes interactive exhibits, historic artifacts, and videos. Walk through the historic house chamber, which has been restored to look like it did at the turn of the 20th century, and see the silver service from the USS Arizona.
Entertaining grandkids is a good way to build new memories — and to wear them out so they don’t keep you up late. Whether you have toddlers on your hands or are connecting with teenagers, visits to these top attractions are your best bet.
