If you seek world-class golf experiences, you do not need to book an expensive trip to Augusta or St. Andrews. Scottsdale boasts many of the country’s elite golfing establishments with luxury accommodations befitting a day on the links. Aderra Condominiums’ prime location means the longest drive you have to make all day comes from the back tees.
Find Your Favorite Course
Close to Home: Stonecreek Golf Club
Of the 20+ stellar local courses, perhaps none is as ideal as Stonecreek Golf Club, adjacent to Aderra. The Golf Channel has recognized this public course as one of Arizona’s “Best-Kept Secrets,” and one stroll down the Bermuda fairways confirms the honor. Creeks interact with five holes on this links-style layout, and you receive striking views of Piestewa Peak on all holes.
PGA Highlight: TPC Scottsdale
No golf compendium would be complete without highlighting TPC Scottsdale, host to the Phoenix Open and the PGA Tour’s raucous Waste Management Open. You may want to try your hand at the famous “loudest hole in golf,” the par-3 16th on the Stadium course. Many note the par-5 15th with its island green and the drivable par-4 17th are even more thrilling, and the views of the McDowell Mountains will never grow tiresome.
Best-in-State: Talking Stick Golf Club
A mere ten miles down Route 101 sits Talking Stick Golf Club, consistently ranked as one of the top courses in Arizona, with the North Course receiving best-in-state honors. Owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and managed by Arnold Palmer Management, its two courses present differing challenges and similarly striking natural splendor. An abundance of trees on the South course make summer golfing comfortable.
Walkable Wonder: Troon North Golf Club
Take the short trek to Pinnacle Peak to play at Troon North Golf Club. Both the effortlessly gorgeous Monument course and the eminently walkable Pinnacle course are open to the public year-round, earning the distinction as one of the “Top 100 Golf Courses You Can Play” by Golf Magazine. Try to keep your focus on the challenging bunkers and cleverly sloped greens instead of the breathtaking backdrop of desert vistas.
For Solitude Seekers: We-Ko-Pa Golf Club
The We-Ko-Pa Golf Club lies further into the hills on the outskirts of Tonto National Forest. The two distinct layouts, including the Saguaro course’s forgiving, wide fairways, rest on Fort McDowell Yavapai tribal land. No homes on the course and a definitive absence of traffic deliver a wondrous sense of solitude here.
Floral Greens: Grayhawk Golf Club
For a change, try the classic fun of Grayhawk Golf Club. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Raptor course has hosted numerous large events, including the Frys.com Open before it departed for the Bay Area. Take aim at the island par-3 17th featuring a beautiful flower-lined green.
Stay on Course: Boulders Golf Club
Boulders Golf Club is aptly named; its South course abuts some of the most unique and stunning boulder formations found anywhere in the American Southwest. Bring your camera — and bring plenty of backup balls, as the North course swallows any stray tee shots that fail to find its narrow fairways.
Watch for the Wicked 6: SunRidge Canyon Golf Club
Carved out of the Sonoran Desert, the courses at SunRidge Canyon Golf Club have properly earned Golfweek’s “Best You Can Play” honors in Arizona. Though it sits just outside Scottsdale limits, you will not regret a trip to this course in the canyons. The closing half-dozen holes, known as the “Wicked 6,” are harrowing enough for the most seasoned golfer, yet all skill levels love this desert golfing outpost.
The 19th Hole
After your round at any of the above golf clubs, you may want to relax with a savory meal and a signature cocktail. Wind down at Talking Stick’s Wildhorse Grille with classic views of Pinnacle Peak, take in the desert scenery at We-Ko-Pa’s Saguaro Grille with a beer bratwurst in hand, or savor traditional and hearty breakfasts at Troon North’s Dynamite Grille.
Other clubhouses provide unique opportunities, such as the Suviche Bar (sushi and ceviche) at TPC Scottsdale’s Toro Latin Restaurant and Rum Bar or the fanfare of bagpipes at SunRidge every Friday at sundown. Many of these facilities may be rented for private or corporate events, including banquets, parties, and weddings.
